In the shop, I have a lot of friends and customers ask me, when discussing Raw food and Vegan diets, what sort of things I make at home. So this has prompted me to start posting my most used and hopefully functional recipes. Some are of my creation but most are gleaned and then modified from the many Endurance sports books, and optimum nutrition books I have read over the years.

Actually its interesting to note, that a lot of Elite endurance athletes are turning to a plant based diet as being the best and healthiest source of protein. (check out – a very interesting vegan site, and a very interesting story).

This is one of my most used recipes, as it is good for both energy and recovery.

Those of you who know me, know I play Badminton at County level and these Vegan Chocolate energy balls are my first choice for fueling and recovery from my matches.

Vegan Chocolate Energy Balls
(adapted from the book Eat & Run – Scott Jurek)


1/2 cup raw cacao nibs
1/2 cup raw cashews8 medium dates
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon organic raw vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon crushed (red) chilli flakes
1/8 teaspoon sea salt or pink Himalayan salt (good for replacing lost electrolytes)
1 1/2 teaspoons raw virgin coconut oil (warmed to a liquid)

Method (basically throw it all in your Nutri-bullet blender thing)

Put all the ingredients except the coconut oil in a food processor and process for 3 – 5 mins, until chopped to a fine consistency.

Transfer the mixture to a large-ish mixing bowl… Add the melted coconut oil and stir well until mixed.

This is the fun  bit… Roll into roughly one 1 inch balls and place on baking/grease proof paper.

Refrigerate for 15 to 20 mins, then transfer to an airtight container. The balls will keep for 2 weeks, refrigerated (thats if they last that long)
