Why coffee is good for you. by Clare Harding
31/08/2011

Of course, as the clip shows, you can have too much.

Otherwise full blown caffeinated coffee is very good for you.

Coffee is good for your liver1 .  It is a bitter herb and as such stimulates the liver into detoxifying. Overall studies back up the positive effects on the liver and its protective qualities against liver cancer2

Coffee stimulates stomach acid production,  so helps digestion.

It also stimulates the gall bladder into squirting out bile, so helps digestion of fats and helps prevent gallstones .

It is an excellent source of anti-oxidants and so is protective against some cancers34.

It is a source of magnesium and chromium, both important minerals in blood sugar regulation.

Contrary to popular opinion, coffee is not a diuretic, but it does stimulate peristalsis, so can lead to those coffee trots.

Coffee does aid sports performance5 . One cup is sufficient for aerobic work.  Strength training requires rather more.

Why some are against drinking coffee

It has a bad name because it is a central nervous system stimulant as the clip above clearly illustrates.

Also when coffee is drunk, the liver releases glycogen (blood sugar) into the blood stream which activates the pancreas into producing insulin, so contributes to blood sugar swings. However the blood sugar rise is very short lived.  Studies are very mixed as to whether it increases insulin resistance 6 or, in fact, improves insulin sensitivity7 .  there is also a study showing that coffee lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes8.  So the jury is out on this subject.

When and how you shouldn’t drink coffee:

After 4pm because it adversely affects sleep. Coffee blocks the parts of the brain that lead to deep sleep, so you may be able to get to sleep having recently drunk coffee, but the quality of the sleep will be poor.

If you are suffering from extreme adrenal fatigue. You will feel pretty terrible if you have this.

If you can’t tolerate coffee. A few people genetically can’t handle coffee – if they drink it they are wired for hours and tend to feel very unpleasant after drinking it.

If it is not organic.  The un-organic coffee bean is choc full of toxins.

If it is dried.  The nutritional value will  be very little.

With milk, particularly skimmed or semi-skimmed milk.  This undoes any antioxidant quality in the coffee.

Pharamcies Vs Health Food Stores
08/08/2011

The drug industry is constantly trying to convince you that drugs are good for your health while nutritional supplements and healthy foods are somehow bad for you. This same line of nonsense is also repeated by the FDA, which goes out of its way to censor the truth about the healing properties of natural foods like walnuts, cherries and berries. (http://www.anh-usa.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Walnut-LEF-article-by-Bill-Faloon1.pdf)

The drug industry and the FDA are, of course, just plain wrong about all this. Although their advertisements show happy, healthy people taking pharmaceuticals, in the real world, people who take their drugs are extremely unhealthy, depressed and highly toxic.

But don't take my word for it: Check out the people walking in and out of pharmacies versus the people who visit health food stores:

• People who visit pharmacies tend to have toxic livers, poor kidney function (because drugs damage the kidneys), wild mood swings, terrible digestion and elimination capabilities, poor skin health, poor posture, low energy, sleep disorders and sexual dysfunction. They tend to be suicidal while living in chronic pain. They have huge medical expenses that often send them into bankruptcy.

• People who visit health food stores tend to have healthy skin, happier outlooks, better energy, better sex lives, healthy sleep, healthy hearts, healthy liver function and greatly improved brain function. They are more creative, adaptable and optimistic, and they tend to enjoy their lives. They spend relatively little on health care expenses while investing their money in organic foods, green products, medicinal herbs and nutritional supplements.

The choice is up to you

Nutrition Survey Reveals Supplement Use in the UK
30/07/2011

You may have seen in the media recently that the Government has released the results from its annual National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS). The survey, now in its second year, looks at the dietary habits of over 2000 men, women and children throughout the UK, including these individuals’ use of food supplements. The full report can be found via this link, survey download, for ease of reference, the short section on dietary supplements can be found on page 66.

The key point that emerged from the Survey was that "a quarter of adults aged 19 to 64 years and more than a third of adults aged 65 years and over reported taking at least one dietary supplement during the four-day recording period”. The survey also notes that a "higher proportion” of participants in the Survey had reported taking more supplements over the previous year than in the four-day recording period for the Survey itself, suggesting that the numbers above may be an underestimate.

This survey is important for two reasons: firstly it exhaustively documents the poor diet of many people in Britain. As noted in the Daily Mail article linked to above, teenagers in particular are not getting the amounts of nutrients that they need.

Secondly this Survey underlines how widespread use of supplementation is in the UK, with 25% of the population taking at least one supplement each day. This means that a large number of people daily rely on higher-dose supplements, something which can be used to bolster campaigning
